Showing Up

Every day, we make certain commitments. We make commitments to ourselves and to other people, but we often half-ass our dedication instead of giving 100%. We’ve heard of the phrase, “showing up is half the battle”, but there’s much more to it.

Presence. To really show up, we have to be there. We have to show up to our kids’ soccer practice. We have to show up to the gym. We have to show up to the business meetings. Our presence is the first step to showing up and showing we care, to ourselves and everyone else.

Consistent Effort. Although we’re present, that doesn’t mean we’re “showing up”. A crucial part of showing up is putting the necessary work in, day in and day out. It’s not enough to be at the gym, we have to push ourselves every single day and not let off the gas pedal. Hard work and consistency is the only way to head in the right direction.

Goals. Without deadlines, we just have dreams. We need to set goals for ourselves to progress over time. Showing up for ourselves and for other people means we need to be concrete about how, when, and why we’re going to show up. We need a plan of action to make things happen.

We all want more out of life. We want more money, more friends, more influence, etc., but none of that will happen unless we show up consistently. We have to give to others and we have to give to ourselves every day. There are no shortcuts, just good old-fashioned dedication and determination.

“Vulnerability is about showing up and being seen. It's tough to do that when we're terrified about what people might see or think.” -Brene Brown
