When passion and perseverance have a baby, we get grit. It's the fundamental building block to achieving anything worth while. Although cultivating mental toughness is essential for success, it's easier said than done.
Small steps. Becoming mentally tough isn't an easy task. Like a muscle, it needs to be worked on and developed over time. Starting with small, simple steps builds us to bigger steps in the future. From hitting an extra rep at the gym to finishing our work a few days early, we're actively pushing ourselves mentally to the next level.
Consistency. Grit doesn't always need to come from a strong surge of courage or inspiration. Those who achieve remarkable things stay the path and never drift. Many of the greats weren't more talented or smarter than you or I, just more consistent. Daily practice, sticking to a schedule, and doing the things we know we're supposed to do on a consistent basis leads us to where we want to be.
Clear goals. Setting specific goals of what we really want to achieve makes all the difference. We need to truly care about these goals to make them worth pursuing. When we have a vision we're passionate about, it's makes it much easier to achieve it.
Working on our mental toughness is difficult and we will struggle. Next time we think about skipping that workout, fight through it. Next time we think about procrastinating, fight through it. Next time we think about something that will give us instant gratification, fight through it. Over time, we'll develop into someone who won't let anything get in the way of our dreams.
"Grit is that 'extra something' that separates the most successful people from the rest. It's the passion, perseverance, and stamina that we must channel in order to stick with our dreams until they become a reality." -Travis Bradberry
